Agricola Odoi

A. Odoi

Agricola Odoi is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Comparative Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and an Adjunct Faculty member in the College of Public and Allied Health, East Tennessee State University. He is a veterinary epidemiologist with research experience in Uganda, Kenya, Canada and the United States. As such, he brings an international perspective to the Institute's activities.

Dr. Odoi's research centers on the application of GIS and spatial epidemiology methods to the investigation of animal and human disease dynamics. He is currently collaborating with investigators at the University of Kentucky in the development of a multistate, automated early warning/alert system for animal disease outbreaks.

This research was partly funded by the Department of Homeland Security. Other relevant ongoing projects include the investigations of the spatial epidemiology of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections in companion animals, and a geographical cluster of reported failures of heart-worm prophylaxis in the United States.

With North Dakota State University & Makerere University (Uganda), Dr. Odoi has recently submitted a pre-proposal to NSF for development of a Global Emerging Infectious Disease Program that will focus on improving our capacity to combat foreign/emerging diseases of animals. The program would offer participating students hands-on experience in the early detection, prevention and control of emerging diseases that do not currently exist in the US through international collaborations with researchers in countries where such diseases do exist.

Dr. Odoi developed and is currently teaching a new graduate course entitled GIS and Geographical Epidemiology. The course attracts biology students from several disciplines across campus. He also developed and taught a course entitled GIS and Public Health during the 2007 Appalachian Summer Institute of Epidemiology held at East Tennessee State University. The course was well attended and well received and will be taught every summer.
